Soul Nebula (IC 1848)
The Soul Nebula (IC 1848) is a vast emission nebula and star-forming region located in the constellation Cassiopeia, about 6,500 light-years away. Often found beside its neighbor, the Heart Nebula (IC 1805), this glowing cloud of gas and dust forms part of a spectacular pair known as the Heart and Soul Nebulae. Together, they stretch across hundreds of light-years of space within the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way.
In this image, the Soul Nebula’s intricate structure comes alive with ribbons of ionized hydrogen, glowing in shades of crimson and pink. Embedded within are clusters of newborn stars, whose powerful radiation sculpts the surrounding gas into sweeping arcs and filaments. The most prominent of these young clusters, Westerhout 5, lights up the central regions of the nebula, shaping its characteristic “soul-like” outline.
The Soul Nebula is both beautiful and dynamic — a cosmic nursery where gravity, radiation, and interstellar winds come together to forge the next generation of stars.
Constellation: Cassiopeia
Distance: ~6,500 light-years
Type: Emission Nebula / Star-Forming Region
Catalog Designations: IC 1848, Westerhout 5
